FAHS DACKEL ASSOCIATION VOTES TO DISBAND

DURING BOARD MEETING SUNDAY

The Frankfurt American High School Dackel Association (FAHS Dackel Association) has voted to disband, with Chairman Dave Klinger continuing to oversee phase out of association business.

The association comprises members of the classes of 1947-55 who attended the American military dependents high school in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Col. Klinger, US Army-ret, was one of the first graduates of the DODEA school system in 1947, and a founder of the association at his class's 50th anniversary in 1997.

Fifty members attended the association board meeting Sunday morning at the Four Points by Sheraton in San Diego, where the association was holding its 16th annual reunion. A recent survey of membership showed that advancing age, declining health and low attendance at recent reunions were creating problems for the current membership. The decision to fold its banner was made in spite of the highest attendance at a Dackel Association meeting. There are 83 attendees at the 2012 Reunion from 20 different states and the District of Columbia, including seven people who attended Nurnberg AHS during the same time period.

Archives maintained by the association will be donated to the Smithsonian Institute.

A final newsletter containing the minutes of the meeting and other association news will be issued this fall. It will contain suggestions to members who have a desire to affiliate with similar organizations.

The 2012 FAHS Dackel Association Reunion was chaired and hosted by San Diego (Tierrasanta) residents Jane and Allan Rapport. Vice-chairs were Jim and Donna Skaggs of Mesa, Arizona.

The reunion ends with a final awards dinner tonight (Sunday Sept. 9, 2012) at the hotel.
